What Goes Under Your Pavers

A Paved Driveway Starts Below the Surface

The finished pattern is only part of a driveway. For clay paving, installation starts with excavation, compacted road base and bedding sand, followed by laying the pavers and securing the edges.

  1. Front yard dug out with string lines set, ready for the road base01

    Dig Out the Area

We excavate the area to make room for the road base, bedding sand and pavers. Any old concrete, paving or turf that needs removing is accounted for when the job is quoted.

  2. Plate compactor on a freshly compacted layer of crushed road base02

Build and Compact the Road Base

Road base is crushed rock that is packed down to form the foundation beneath the paving. We place and compact it in layers before preparing the sand bed.

  3. Bedding sand screeded flat beside a mortared edge course03

    Prepare the Bedding Sand

Bedding sand is spread over the compacted base and levelled with a straight edge, ready for the pavers to be laid.

  4. Gloved hands laying brown clay pavers in herringbone onto a screeded sand bed04

Lay the Pavers and Secure the Edges

We lay the pavers in the chosen pattern inside a border row, also called a header course. Mortar supports the outside edge, and polymeric jointing sand, a sand that sets firm, fills the gaps between the pavers.

Clay, Travertine and Porcelain

Dry or Wet Paving: Which Suits Your Job?

We install clay, travertine and porcelain pavers. Your choice of material and where it will be used determine how the paving is laid, using either a prepared sand bed or mortar.

Laid on a Sand Bed

Dry Paving: Clay and Brick Pavers

Clay or brick pavers are laid on compacted road base and bedding sand, rather than being set in mortar. This is the approach used for our dry-paved driveways, garden paths and courtyards, with jointing sand swept into the gaps.

Wet Paving: Travertine and Porcelain

Wet paving, also called rigid paving, uses mortar to set the pavers or outdoor tiles in place. For swimming pool surrounds, we lay travertine or porcelain pavers over a concrete slab, with coping finishing the pool edge. Our outdoor tiling also uses mortar rather than a sand bed.

Laying Patterns

Choose a Pattern for Your Driveway or Path

The same pavers can create a different look depending on how they are arranged. These four paving patterns offer options for driveways, paths, courtyards and entertaining areas.

Ask Which Pattern Suits Your Job

Red clay pavers laid in 45 degree herringbone, seen from above01/04

45° Herringbone

For Driveways

Pavers arranged in a zigzag pattern at 45° to the border. The diagonal layout gives the driveway a distinct pattern within its surrounding edges.

Charcoal and plum blend clay pavers laid in 90 degree herringbone, seen from above02/04

90° Herringbone

For Driveways and Garage Approaches

The same zigzag arrangement, aligned square to the edges. An alternative to diagonal herringbone for driveways and the area in front of your garage.

Buff clay paver garden path laid in stretcher bond03/04

Stretcher Bond

For Paths and Courtyards

Rows offset by half a paver, like a brick wall laid flat. A simple, regular pattern for garden paths and paved areas around the home.

Copper and tan clay pavers laid in basket weave, seen from above04/04

Basket Weave

For Courtyards and Entertaining Areas

Pairs of pavers alternate in direction to create a woven appearance. A traditional pattern for courtyard paving and outdoor seating areas.

Your Paving Quote

What Affects the Cost of Paving

Paving costs depend on the measured area and the work needed to prepare, lay and finish it. Your quote accounts for the pavers, site preparation, removal of existing surfaces, laying pattern and access.

  • The Size of the AreaThe total area in square metres forms the starting point of your paving quote.
  • Your Choice of PaversClay pavers, travertine and porcelain have different material costs per square metre. Your quote accounts for the pavers selected for the job.
  • The Preparation RequiredDry-laid driveway paving and mortar-set pool paving involve different preparation. The base and laying method are included in the installation price.
  • What Needs RemovingExisting concrete, old paving or turf may need to be lifted and taken away before we prepare the area for new pavers.
  • The Pattern and CuttingYour chosen paving pattern, curved edges and borders affect how many pavers need cutting and the laying work involved.
  • Access to the SiteAccess for machinery and materials affects the work required. A narrow side path can mean moving loads by wheelbarrow rather than machine.

Tell us what you are planning and roughly how large the area is. We will measure the site and work out a paving quote for your project.

Paving Questions

Questions Before You Book

Do I Need Exact Measurements to Request a Paving Quote?

No. An approximate size is enough for your first enquiry. Tell us what needs paving and where the property is, and we'll measure the area before we quote.

Can You Remove Old Concrete Before Laying New Pavers?

Yes. Existing concrete, pavers or turf can be removed as part of preparing the area. The removal work needs to be accounted for in your quote, so mention the current surface when you contact us.

Do You Offer Paving Outside Canberra?

Yes. As well as Canberra, we pave in Yass, Goulburn, Braidwood and Cooma. Put your suburb or town in your quote request.

Does Your Pool Paving Service Include Coping?

Yes. We lay travertine or porcelain pool surrounds and install the coping pavers along the pool edge. The surrounding paving is set in mortar over a concrete slab.

Can You Repair Sunken Pavers Rather Than Replace the Paving?

Yes. We lift sunken or loose pavers, level and compact the bed underneath, then relay the existing pavers. Tell us which area needs attention when you enquire about paving repairs.

Can You Lay Pavers Straight on Dirt?

Our dry-paving method uses compacted road base and bedding sand rather than laying pavers directly on soil. The area is excavated and prepared before the pavers go down.

Do You Install Porcelain Pavers in Canberra?

Yes. We install porcelain pavers for pool surrounds and large-format porcelain outdoor tiles for porches and patios. These are set in mortar rather than installed in the same way as dry-laid clay pavers.
